Day 39 · Part 3: Out of Egypt
The Tabernacle (2 of 2)
In the Story
In context
The work is finished: the bronze altar, the bronze basin made from the mirrors of the women who served at the tent’s door (Exodus 38:8), the courtyard, and Aaron’s holy clothes. The metals are counted: about 29 talents of gold, nearly a ton; over 100 talents of silver, more than three tons, from the half shekel given by each of 603,550 men; and over 70 talents of bronze, about 2.1 metric tons, as the WEB notes (38:24–29).
Again and again these chapters say it was done “as Yahweh commanded Moses,” and when Moses saw the work, he blessed them (39:42–43). On the first day of the first month of the second year, nearly a year after leaving Egypt, Moses sets up the tabernacle (40:17). The cloud covers the tent and the Lord’s glory fills it, so that even Moses cannot go in (40:34–35). From then on, Israel moves on when the cloud lifts and stays while it stays (40:36–38). A cloud and the Lord’s glory later fill Solomon’s temple in the same way (1 Kings 8:10–11).
How lovely are your dwellings, Yahweh of Armies! My soul longs, and even faints for the courts of Yahweh. My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.
Psalms 84:1–2 · The tabernacle stands finished, with its courtyard, and the Lord’s glory fills it; this psalm begins, “How lovely are your dwellings,” and longs for the Lord’s courts.

A hymn for today
To God Be the Glory · words by Fanny J. Crosby
- To God be the glory, great things He hath done;So loved He the world that He gave us His Son,Who yielded His life an atonement for sin,And opened the life-gate that all may go in.RefrainPraise the Lord, praise the Lord,Let the earth hear His voice!Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,Let the people rejoice!O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,And give Him the glory, great things He hath done.
- O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood,To every believer the promise of God;The vilest offender who truly believes,That moment from Jesus a pardon receives.RefrainPraise the Lord, praise the Lord,Let the earth hear His voice!Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,Let the people rejoice!O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,And give Him the glory, great things He hath done.
- Great things He hath taught us, great things He hath done,And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;But purer, and higher, and greater will beOur wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see.RefrainPraise the Lord, praise the Lord,Let the earth hear His voice!Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,Let the people rejoice!O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,And give Him the glory, great things He hath done.
