Day 110 · Part 7: The Kingdom
Solomon Takes the Throne (3 of 3)
In the Story
In context
More lists: the gatekeepers, who cast lots for the gates, “the small as well as the great” (1 Chronicles 26:13); the treasurers, who kept the gifts dedicated by Samuel, Saul, Abner and Joab (26:26–28); twelve army divisions of 24,000 men, each serving one month a year (27:1–15); and the stewards of the king’s fields, vineyards, olive trees, herds and camels (27:25–31). Some names are familiar: Benaiah, Asahel, Ahithophel “the king’s counselor” and Hushai “the king’s friend” (27:5–7, 33).
Then David gathers Israel’s leaders. God chose Solomon to build the house, he tells them, and he gives Solomon the plans “that he had by the Spirit” (28:1–12). He gives his own gold and silver, the leaders give willingly, and “the people rejoiced” (29:3–9). In his prayer David says that everything they have given came from God: “all things come from you, and we have given you of your own” (29:14). Solomon is anointed a second time, and David dies “at a good old age, full of days, riches, and honor” (29:22, 28).
David said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and courageous, and do it. Don’t be afraid, nor be dismayed, for Yahweh God, even my God, is with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you, until all the work for the service of Yahweh’s house is finished.
1 Chronicles 28:20 · David’s words as he handed the great work to his son: “Yahweh God, even my God, is with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”
For families
In front of all the leaders David said, “You, Solomon my son, know the God of your father” (1 Chronicles 28:9). He had gathered gold, silver, wood and stone for the house his son would build (29:2), and he prayed, “give to Solomon my son a perfect heart” (29:19).
David got everything ready for a job his son would finish. What has someone in your family started that someone else carried on?
