In context

Today is a day of lists. As an old man, David makes Solomon king and organizes the tribe of Levi for the work of God’s house (1 Chronicles 23:1–6). Since the Lord now dwelt in Jerusalem, the Levites would no longer carry the tabernacle; they would help the priests, and “stand every morning to thank and praise Yahweh, and likewise in the evening” (23:25–30).

The priests, Aaron’s descendants, are divided by lot into twenty-four groups that take turns serving (24:1–19). The eighth lot fell to Abijah, and in Luke, Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist, is a priest “of the priestly division of Abijah” (24:10; Luke 1:5). The singers come from the families of Asaph, Heman and Jeduthun, and they too cast lots, “the small as well as the great, the teacher as well as the student” (1 Chronicles 25:1–8). Psalms 50 and 73–83 carry Asaph’s name.

Chronicles ends with Cyrus of Persia letting the exiles go home (2 Chronicles 36:22–23). When the new temple’s foundation was laid, the priests with trumpets and the sons of Asaph with cymbals praised the Lord “according to the directions of David king of Israel” (Ezra 3:10).

A word of hope
It is a good thing to give thanks to Yahweh, to sing praises to your name, Most High, to proclaim your loving kindness in the morning, and your faithfulness every night,

Psalms 92:1–2 · The Levites praised the Lord morning and evening; the psalm says it is good “to proclaim your loving kindness in the morning, and your faithfulness every night.”

For families

God gave Heman, “the king’s seer,” fourteen sons and three daughters. “All these were under the hands of their father for song in Yahweh’s house” (1 Chronicles 25:5–6). Jeduthun’s six sons also made music “under the hands of their father” (25:3).

Heman’s sons made music with their father. What does your family like to do together?
