Day 81 · Part 6: The Judges
Deborah and Jael · Gideon
In the Story
In context
After Ehud died, Jabin, a king of Canaan in Hazor, oppressed Israel for twenty years with nine hundred iron chariots under his commander Sisera (Judges 4:1–3). Israel’s judge was Deborah, a prophetess, who heard cases under a palm tree between Ramah and Bethel (4:4–5). She sent Barak with ten thousand men to Mount Tabor, and the Lord threw Sisera’s army into confusion by the Kishon River. Sisera fled on foot to the tent of Jael, and she killed him as he slept, a hard scene told plainly (4:6–22). So Deborah’s words came true: “Yahweh will sell Sisera into a woman’s hand” (4:9). Chapter 5 is their song of that day.
Next, Midian and its allies raided Israel for seven years, coming “as locusts for multitude” (6:1–5). The Lord’s angel found Gideon beating out wheat in a wine press to hide it from them, and called him a “mighty man of valor” (6:11–12). Gideon pulled down his father’s altar to Baal and asked twice for a sign with a fleece. Twenty-two thousand who were afraid went home, and the Lord kept only three hundred, “lest Israel brag against me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me’” (7:2–7). With trumpets, jars and torches, the three hundred put Midian to flight (7:16–22). Isaiah later spoke of “the day of Midian” (Isaiah 9:4).
Some trust in chariots, and some in horses, but we trust in the name of Yahweh our God. They are bowed down and fallen, but we rise up, and stand upright.
Psalms 20:7–8 · Sisera had nine hundred iron chariots and Gideon three hundred men; David’s psalm says, “Some trust in chariots… but we trust in the name of Yahweh our God.”
For families
Gideon pulled down his father’s altar to Baal at night, because he was afraid of his father’s household and the men of the town (6:25–27). In the morning the men told his father, “Bring out your son, that he may die.” Joash stood by his son: “If he is a god, let him contend for himself” (6:30–31).
Joash stood up for his son against the men of the town. When has someone in your family stood up for you?

A hymn for today
A Mighty Fortress Is Our God · words by Martin Luther
- A mighty fortress is our God,A bulwark never failing; Our helper He, amid the floodOf mortal ills prevailing:For still our ancient foeDoth seek to work us woe;His craft and pow'r are great,And, armed with cruel hate,On earth is not his equal.
- Did we in our own strength confide,Our striving would be losing; Were not the right Man on our side,The Man of God's own choosing:Dost ask who that may be?Christ Jesus, it is He;Lord Sabaoth His name,From age to age the same,And He must win the battle.
- And though this world, with devils filled,Should threaten to undo us,We will not fear, for God hath willedHis truth to triumph through us:The prince of darkness grim,We tremble not for him;His rage we can endure,For lo, his doom is sure; One little word shall fell him.
- That word above all earthly pow'rs,No thanks to them, abideth; The Spirit and the gifts are oursThrough Him who with us sideth:Let goods and kindred go,This mortal life also; The body they may kill:God's truth abideth still; His kingdom is forever.
