Day 62 · Part 4: The Wilderness
The Journey Remembered
In the Story
In context
At the Lord’s command Moses wrote down every stage of Israel’s journey (Numbers 33:1–2). It began at Rameses “on the next day after the Passover,” while the Egyptians were burying their firstborn (33:3–4), and ran through the sea, Sinai and Kadesh, more than forty camps in all, to the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho (33:5–49). Aaron died on Mount Hor “in the fortieth year,” aged 123 (33:38–39).
The Lord gave the land’s borders, from the wilderness of Zin in the south to “the entrance of Hamath” in the north, between the great sea (the Mediterranean) and the Jordan (34:1–12), and named a leader from each tribe, Caleb among them, to divide it (34:16–29). The Levites, who would have no tribal land, were to get forty-eight cities with pasture lands (35:1–7). Six would be cities of refuge, three on each side of the Jordan, where someone who killed a person by accident could flee from the avenger of blood, a relative of the dead, until he was judged (35:9–15, 22–25). A murderer was to be put to death, but never on the word of one witness (35:16–21, 30).
The book ends with Zelophehad’s daughters once more (36:1–12), and closes “in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho” (36:13).
Yahweh is your keeper. Yahweh is your shade on your right hand. The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. Yahweh will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. Yahweh will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.
Psalms 121:5–8 · Moses wrote down every stage of Israel’s travels; the psalm promises, “Yahweh will keep your going out and your coming in.”
For families
Zelophehad’s daughters were told they could marry “whom they think best,” only within their father’s tribe, so his land would not pass to another tribe. Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah and Noah married “their father’s brothers’ sons,” their cousins, and the land stayed in their father’s family (Numbers 36:6–12).
What has been handed down in your family, and what is its story?

A hymn for today
When We All Get to Heaven · words by Eliza E. Hewitt
- Sing the wondrous love of Jesus,Sing His mercy and His grace; In the mansions bright and blessèdHe'll prepare for us a place.RefrainWhen we all get to heaven,What a day of rejoicing that will be!When we all see Jesus,We'll sing and shout the victory!
- While we walk the pilgrim pathway,Clouds will overspread the sky;But when trav'ling days are over,Not a shadow, not a sigh.RefrainWhen we all get to heaven,What a day of rejoicing that will be!When we all see Jesus,We'll sing and shout the victory!
- Let us then be true and faithful,Trusting, serving every day;Just one glimpse of Him in gloryWill the toils of life repay.RefrainWhen we all get to heaven,What a day of rejoicing that will be!When we all see Jesus,We'll sing and shout the victory!
- Onward to the prize before us!Soon His beauty we'll behold;Soon the pearly gates will open;We shall tread the streets of gold.RefrainWhen we all get to heaven,What a day of rejoicing that will be!When we all see Jesus,We'll sing and shout the victory!
