In context

Ten years after coming to Canaan, Sarai still has no child, so she gives her Egyptian servant Hagar to Abram as a wife (Genesis 16:1–3). When Hagar runs away, the angel of the Lord finds her by a spring, and she calls the Lord “a God who sees.” The WEB’s note says the well’s name, Beer Lahai Roi, means “well of the one who lives and sees me” (Genesis 16:13–14).

When Abram is 99, God renames him Abraham, “for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations,” renames Sarai as Sarah, and gives circumcision as the sign of his covenant (Genesis 17:1, 5, 10–15). Abraham laughs at the thought of a son at 100, and the boy is to be named Isaac, which the WEB’s note says means “he laughs” (Genesis 17:17–19). By the oaks of Mamre, Abraham welcomes three visitors with bread from three seahs of flour, about six gallons, and hears, “Is anything too hard for Yahweh?” (Genesis 18:6, 14).

Genesis 19 is hard to read: the men of Sodom want to force themselves on Lot’s guests, the Lord destroys Sodom and Gomorrah, Lot’s wife looks back and becomes a pillar of salt, and Lot’s daughters have sons by their father, the ancestors of the Moabites and the Ammonites (Genesis 19:36–38).

A word of hope
Behold, Elizabeth your relative also has conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For nothing spoken by God is impossible.”

Luke 1:36–37 · Like Sarah, Elizabeth was old and had been called barren; the angel tells Mary, “nothing spoken by God is impossible.”

For families

When God promised a son through Sarah, Abraham spoke up for the son he already had, asking that Ishmael “might live before you.” God answered, “As for Ishmael, I have heard you,” and promised to bless him too (Genesis 17:18–20).

What do you think Abraham felt when God said, “As for Ishmael, I have heard you”?

  1. Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer! That calls me from a world of care,And bids me at my Father's throneMake all my wants and wishes known; In seasons of distress and grief,My soul has often found relief,And oft escaped the tempter's snareBy thy return, sweet hour of prayer!
  2. Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!Thy wings shall my petition bearTo Him whose truth and faithfulnessEngage the waiting soul to bless; And since He bids me seek His face,Believe His word and trust His grace,I'll cast on Him my every care,And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!
  3. Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!May I thy consolation share,Till, from Mount Pisgah's lofty height,I view my home and take my flight:This robe of flesh I'll drop, and riseTo seize the everlasting prize; And shout, while passing through the air,Farewell, farewell, sweet hour of prayer!
