In context

In the third round of speeches the friends say less. Eliphaz speaks a third time and now names wrongs he says Job has done: taking his own brother’s things as security for a debt for no reason, giving no water to the weary or bread to the hungry, and sending widows away empty-handed (Job 22:5–9). Bildad answers in only six verses (Job 25), and Zophar does not speak again.

Job answers that he longs to find God and lay out his case before him (23:3–4), but he looks east and west, north and south, and cannot find him (23:8–9). Still he says, “When he has tried me, I will come out like gold” (23:10). He describes the poor, robbed, hungry and cold, and says God pays no attention to the wrong (24:4–12). He praises God, who “hangs the earth on nothing” (26:7), and swears he will hold on to his integrity as long as he lives (27:5–6).

Sheol (24:19; 26:6) is the place of the dead, as the WEB’s note says, and Abaddon means Destroyer.

A word of hope
For you, God, have tested us. You have refined us, as silver is refined. You brought us into prison. You laid a burden on our backs. You allowed men to ride over our heads. We went through fire and through water, but you brought us to the place of abundance.

Psalms 66:10–12 · Job says that when God has tested him he will “come out like gold” (Job 23:10); the psalm speaks of being refined like silver, then brought to abundance.
