In context

Zophar, the third friend, tells Job that “God exacts of you less than your iniquity deserves” (Job 11:6). Like the others, he promises that if Job puts away his sin, his life will be “clearer than the noonday” (Job 11:13–17).

Job’s long answer closes the first round of speeches. He calls his friends “physicians of no value” (Job 13:4) and wants to argue his case with God himself. Job 13:15 is a verse translations read differently: the WEB has “Behold, he will kill me. I have no hope,” while the King James Version has “Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him.” Each follows one of two old Hebrew readings of the line.

Job 14 begins with words long read at funerals: “Man, who is born of a woman, is of few days, and full of trouble” (Job 14:1). A tree that is cut down can sprout again, Job says, but a man lies down and doesn’t rise; then he asks, “If a man dies, will he live again?” (Job 14:7–14).

A word of hope
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies. Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

John 11:25–26 · Job asks, “If a man dies, will he live again?”; Jesus tells Martha, “He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies.”
