In context

Zechariah, grandson of Iddo, begins to prophesy in the second year of Darius, two months after Haggai: “Return to me,” says the Lord, “and I will return to you” (Zechariah 1:1–3; Haggai 1:1). In visions in the night he sees horses among myrtle trees, four horns and four craftsmen, and a man going to measure Jerusalem, and hears that the Lord will be to the city “a wall of fire around it” (Zechariah 1:7–2:5).

Joshua (Jeshua) the high priest stands in filthy clothes, with Satan standing at his right hand “to be his adversary,” and the Lord says, “Take the filthy garments off him,” and tells Joshua, “I have caused your iniquity to pass from you” (3:1–4). To Zerubbabel the word is, “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit,” and, “who despises the day of small things?” (4:6, 10).

At the end the Lord tells Zechariah to make crowns of silver and gold and set them on Joshua’s head, and speaks of “the man whose name is the Branch,” who “will build Yahweh’s temple” (6:11–12).

A word of hope
“Come now, and let’s reason together,” says Yahweh: “Though your sins are as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

Isaiah 1:18 · Joshua’s filthy clothes were taken off and his iniquity taken away; through Isaiah the Lord says, “Though your sins are as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.”
