Day 146 · Part 8: Two Kingdoms
The Fall of Jerusalem (2 of 2)
In the Story
In context
Four officials want Jeremiah dead for telling the people that whoever goes out to the Chaldeans will live, and they let him down with cords into a dungeon, where he sinks in the mire (Jeremiah 38:1–6). Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, an official in the king’s house, speaks up for him, and with thirty men and some worn-out rags to pad the cords under his arms they pull him out (38:7–13). In another secret talk Zedekiah asks Jeremiah to hide nothing, but Zedekiah is afraid (38:14–19).
It is a hard reading: the city falls, and Zedekiah’s sons are killed before his eyes (39:1–7). Nebuchadnezzar orders that Jeremiah be cared for, and he is given into the keeping of Gedaliah (39:11–14). The Lord tells Ebedmelech, “I will surely save you… because you have put your trust in me” (39:18). Jeremiah 52 tells the fall again, as 2 Kings does, and counts those carried away in three groups, “four thousand six hundred,” a different count from 2 Kings 24:14 (52:28–30).
Obadiah’s short book is about Edom, the people descended from Esau, Jacob’s brother, who stood aside when Jerusalem was taken and was “like one of them” (Obadiah 1:10–11). Psalm 137 remembers the same day (Psalm 137:7).
But the salvation of the righteous is from Yahweh. He is their stronghold in the time of trouble. Yahweh helps them and rescues them. He rescues them from the wicked and saves them, because they have taken refuge in him.
Psalms 37:39–40 · The Lord promised Ebedmelech safety “because you have put your trust in me”; the psalm says the Lord rescues the righteous “because they have taken refuge in him.”
For families
Obadiah calls Judah “your brother Jacob” when he speaks to Edom, the people descended from Jacob’s twin brother Esau (Obadiah 1:10; Genesis 25:25–26). He tells Edom, “don’t look down on your brother in the day of his disaster” (Obadiah 1:12).
What do brothers, sisters or cousins in your family do when one of them has a hard day?

A hymn for today
Rock of Ages · words by Augustus M. Toplady
- Rock of Ages, cleft for me,Let me hide myself in Thee;Let the water and the blood,From Thy wounded side which flowed,Be of sin the double cure,Save from wrath and make me pure.
- Not the labor of my handsCan fulfill Thy law's demands;Could my zeal no respite know,Could my tears forever flow,All for sin could not atone;Thou must save, and Thou alone.
- Nothing in my hand I bring,Simply to Thy cross I cling;Naked, come to Thee for dress;Helpless, look to Thee for grace;Foul, I to the fountain fly;Wash me, Savior, or I die.
- While I draw this fleeting breath,When mine eyes shall close in death,When I soar to worlds unknown,See Thee on Thy judgment throne,Rock of Ages, cleft for me,Let me hide myself in Thee.
