Day 144 · Part 8: Two Kingdoms
Against the Nations
In the Story
In context
These are Jeremiah’s words “concerning the nations” (Jeremiah 46:1). They begin with Egypt’s army beaten by Nebuchadnezzar at Carchemish on the Euphrates “in the fourth year of Jehoiakim” (46:2), about 605 BC, the battle that left Babylon the strongest power of its day. Then come words about the Philistines, Moab, Ammon, Edom, Damascus, Kedar and Hazor, and Elam, east of Babylon in what is now Iran (47–49).
It is a hard reading, full of war: the sword “will drink its fill of their blood,” and fathers “don’t look back for their children because their hands are so feeble” (46:10; 47:3). Moab “has settled on his dregs,” like wine left too long undisturbed, and will be poured off (48:11–12); Edom, though it nests “as high as the eagle,” will be brought down (49:16).
The warnings carry promises too. To Israel the Lord says, “Don’t be afraid, O Jacob my servant… for I am with you” (46:28). Of Moab, Ammon and Elam he says he will “reverse the captivity” in time to come (48:47; 49:6, 39), and to Edom, “Leave your fatherless children. I will preserve them alive. Let your widows trust in me” (49:11).
The nations raged. The kingdoms were moved. He lifted his voice and the earth melted. Yahweh of Armies is with us. The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
Psalms 46:6–7 · Jeremiah sees kingdom after kingdom fall but tells Jacob, “I am with you”; the psalm says, “The kingdoms were moved… The God of Jacob is our refuge.”

A hymn for today
A Mighty Fortress Is Our God · words by Martin Luther
- A mighty fortress is our God,A bulwark never failing; Our helper He, amid the floodOf mortal ills prevailing:For still our ancient foeDoth seek to work us woe;His craft and pow'r are great,And, armed with cruel hate,On earth is not his equal.
- Did we in our own strength confide,Our striving would be losing; Were not the right Man on our side,The Man of God's own choosing:Dost ask who that may be?Christ Jesus, it is He;Lord Sabaoth His name,From age to age the same,And He must win the battle.
- And though this world, with devils filled,Should threaten to undo us,We will not fear, for God hath willedHis truth to triumph through us:The prince of darkness grim,We tremble not for him;His rage we can endure,For lo, his doom is sure; One little word shall fell him.
- That word above all earthly pow'rs,No thanks to them, abideth; The Spirit and the gifts are oursThrough Him who with us sideth:Let goods and kindred go,This mortal life also; The body they may kill:God's truth abideth still; His kingdom is forever.
