Day 140 · Part 8: Two Kingdoms
The Siege of Jerusalem (2 of 2)
In the Story
In context
Isaiah tells the siege of Jerusalem again in nearly the same words as 2 Kings, so much of today’s reading repeats yesterday’s (Isaiah 36–39; 2 Kings 18:13–20:19). These four chapters stand between Isaiah’s warnings and the words of comfort that open chapter 40.
Only Isaiah keeps “The writing of Hezekiah king of Judah, when he had been sick, and had recovered” (38:9). “In the middle of my life I go into the gates of Sheol,” he writes, Sheol being the place of the dead, and he pictures his life taken down “like a shepherd’s tent” and cut “from the loom” (38:10–12). He tells God, “you have cast all my sins behind your back” (38:17), and ends, “The father shall make known your truth to the children” and “Yahweh will save me” (38:19–20). The sign was the shadow going back ten steps “on the sundial of Ahaz,” his father (38:8).
Then Merodach-baladan, king of Babylon, sends envoys, and Hezekiah shows them all his treasures. Isaiah says that one day everything in his house will be carried to Babylon, and Hezekiah answers, “there will be peace and truth in my days” (39:1–8).
For you have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, and my feet from falling. I will walk before Yahweh in the land of the living.
Psalms 116:8–9 · Hezekiah feared he would not see the Lord “in the land of the living”; the psalm says, “I will walk before Yahweh in the land of the living.”
For families
After he recovered, Hezekiah wrote, “The living, the living, he shall praise you, as I do today. The father shall make known your truth to the children” (Isaiah 38:19).
Hezekiah wrote of a father telling his children about God’s truth. What would you want to tell your own children or grandchildren one day?

A hymn for today
Sweet Hour of Prayer · words by William W. Walford
- Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer! That calls me from a world of care,And bids me at my Father's throneMake all my wants and wishes known; In seasons of distress and grief,My soul has often found relief,And oft escaped the tempter's snareBy thy return, sweet hour of prayer!
- Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!Thy wings shall my petition bearTo Him whose truth and faithfulnessEngage the waiting soul to bless; And since He bids me seek His face,Believe His word and trust His grace,I'll cast on Him my every care,And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!
- Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!May I thy consolation share,Till, from Mount Pisgah's lofty height,I view my home and take my flight:This robe of flesh I'll drop, and riseTo seize the everlasting prize; And shout, while passing through the air,Farewell, farewell, sweet hour of prayer!
