In context

Chronicles tells the ark’s second journey in more detail. This time the Levites carried it “on their shoulders with its poles, as Moses commanded,” because the first time “we didn’t seek him according to the ordinance” (1 Chronicles 15:13–15). David had the Levites appoint singers and players: Heman, Asaph and Ethan with bronze cymbals, and Chenaniah to lead the singing (15:16–22). Twelve psalms bear Asaph’s name (Psalms 50 and 73–83).

When the ark was set in its tent, David gave everyone in Israel bread, meat and raisins, and put Asaph and his relatives in charge of giving thanks before it every day (16:1–7, 37). The song of thanks that follows (16:8–36) is found, with small differences, in parts of three psalms (Psalms 105:1–15; 96; 106:1, 47–48), and at its end “All the people said, ‘Amen,’ and praised Yahweh” (16:36).

Chapter 17 tells Nathan’s promise again, a little differently; here it ends with David’s son: “I will settle him in my house and in my kingdom forever” (17:14). David’s prayer asks, “Who am I, Yahweh God, and what is my house, that you have brought me this far?” (17:16).

A word of hope
Oh give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever.

1 Chronicles 16:34 · David’s singers gave thanks “because his loving kindness endures forever” (16:41); Psalm 136 repeats those words in every verse.
